Kuvasz Information

Kuvasz Description:

The Kuvasz is arguably the oldest identifiable breed of dog in the world today. Although the exact origins of the breed are unknown, it is said to have originated during the Mesopotamian time. It is believed that the Magyar tribes brought this breed with them when they settled along the Carpathian Basin. It is also believed that back then, the breed was used for guarding livestock. The latest known records of the breed date back to the 15th century. During the reign of King Corvinus, the breed gained special importance as it began to be gifted to royal patrons. However, by the end of the Second World War, the breed has almost vanished. Renowned for their bravery, the breed was killed by the Russians. Due to the breeding efforts of some individuals, the breed was revived and gained in prominence in Hungary again. The Kuvasz derived its name from the Turkish word "Kawasz," means "armed guard of the nobility". The breed was first recognized by the AKC on 1931.

The Kuvasz is a dog of a moderate build with an athletic frame. It has a proportionate head and is the most beautiful part of the body. It has almond shaped eyes which are dark brown in color; V-shaped ears which are slightly away from the cheeks; a proportionate muzzle which is slightly tapering towards the end; black lips with a scissors bite or a level bite and a black nose. The tail is strong and carried low with a slight curve at the tip. This breed has a double coat with a coarse outer coat and a soft and fine undercoat. The coat can be wavy to straight in nature but is always white in color and, with a heavily pigmented skin.

The Kuvasz is an independent and a brave breed. They are generally reserved in nature and have a fierce protective instinct. They have a tendency to guard their territory as well as their family. So they are not very friendly with strangers or other dogs. Caution is advised when leaving them with children. They do not take very well to their territorial encroachment and may become very aggressive. Hence, they are not suitable for most families having kids. However, when young, they can be taught to socialize and respect other pets and human beings. They are difficult to train too. Expert help is required to train them as they do not respond very well to obedience training. A firm hand is needed while training them. Being an innate livestock guardian, they make for excellent watchdogs. They are not suitable for apartment life.

Kuvasz Care & Grooming:

The Kuvasz is a seasonally heavy shedder. To maintain its double coat regular brushing is required. However, this breed should not be bathed too often as the coat has the natural tendency to remove dirt.

It is an outdoor breed and thus requires a lot of exercise. A long walk is recommended daily for effective emotional and physical development of this breed. Leaving it alone for long durations can result in overtly aggressive behavior. It is sensitive to warm climate so care should be taken while taking them out.

Kuvasz Health Problems:

The Kuvasz prone to some health issues like hip dysplasia, skin allergies and hypertrophic osteodystrophy.
