Bernese Mountain Dog Information

Bernese Mountain Dog Description:

The Bernese Mountain Dog, also known as Bernese Sennenhund in German, is large breed dog which was primarily used as farm dog. It derives its name from a small cantonment in the Swiss Alps which is its place of origin. In the olden days, it was used for driving dairy cattle to pastures, pulling carts and acting as a companion to the farmers. It was in 1907 that the breed was established as a separate breed of dog. The breed was first recognized by the AKC in 1937.

This breed is a large masculine breed well distinguished by its sturdy frame. Bernese Mountain Dogs have a medium sized head with an intelligent expression; oval shaped eyes with droopy eyelids; triangular shaped ears which are close to the head; a straight and robust muzzle; black nose with thin lips and teeth with a scissors bite. It has a bushy tail which is carried low. The forelegs of this dog are strong, straight and moderate in length while the hindlegs are muscular and well balanced. It has a thick coat which is medium in length, glossy and straight or slightly wavy. The color of the coat is tricolored; combination of black, white and rust. The base of the dog is black with symmetrical patches of rust and white.

Bernese Mountain Dog is an active working dog. It is very easy to train and is comfortable around children and other pets. This dog has been bred as a watchdog and a farm dog since the ancestral times. However, it is not overtly aggressive and therefore, comfortable around strangers. Given the mountain climbing and cart pulling nature of the breed, it is very easy to train. This breed behaves like a young puppy longer than other breeds and thus needs a firm hand during training. Catering to every whim and desire of this breed does not produce favorable results. It is a sociable breed which loves company so should be taught to socialize at an early age for healthy emotional development. It has an outdoor personality and always wants something to do. It is not well suited to an apartment life and more comfortable in at least in an average sized yard.

Bernese Mountain Dog Care & Grooming:

The Bernese Mountain Dog is an average shedder and sheds heavily during spring and fall. Brushing 3-4 times a week and almost daily brushing during shedding season is sufficient to maintain a healthy looking coat. It should be bathed only when necessary and must be dried properly after each bath. Its eyes and ears need to be cleaned properly to avoid any infection. The hair around its eyes, ears and paws, and nails should be trimmed regularly.

It is an active breed which needs daily exercise. Daily long walks are essential to keep the dog healthy both physically and mentally. Walks should be supplemented with jogging, running or a romp in an open secured area regularly. This breed is prone to gain weight easily so should not be overfed. It is sensitive to very warm climate so should be adequately protected.

Bernese Mountain Dog Health Problems:

The Bernese Mountain Dog is prone to some health issues like Cancer, Bloat, Eye disease, hip Dysplasia, Tumor etc.
