The Rottweiler (pronounced as ROTT-why-ler) is an ancient dog, believed to be descended from the Drover dogs of Rome. These drover dogs were brought to Germany by Roman army, and were crossbred with some local breeds of Rottweil (a small town in Germany) to produce a powerful dog. Rottweiler derived it name from the town Rottweil , initially was known as “Rottweil Butcher’s Dog” and later shortened to Rottweiler. They were used for cattle herding, bear hunting etc. By early 1900’s this dog gained popularity as guard dog and started working closely with police and military. The first Rottweiler registered by the AKC was in 1931, and now it has become one of the popular breed in the world.

Rottweiler is a robust and powerful large dog with a broad and rounded forehead; well developed muzzle; chest is broad and deep; teeth meet in a scissors bite and number of teeth are 42; lips are black; the almond-shaped eyes are medium in size and dark brown in color; pendant ears are medium in size, triangular in shape and set well apart; nose is wide and black; legs are straight and well muscled; tail is docked (Docking is banned in most parts of Europe. It has a double coat; outer coat is medium, dense, hard, straight and lying flat. The color of the coat is always black, with rust to mahogany markings. Dogs are larger and heavier than the bitches, and bitches are distinctly feminine.

The Rottie is a calm, powerful, brave, confident and loyal dog. It is somewhat aloof and does not accept anyone immediately, which makes him a good watch dog. Generally it does not bark but barks loudly when feel any danger or any unknown person’s presence. This intelligent breed is easy to train and with proper training it may go well with children and other pets. Due to its large size it may not be a good choice for families having younger children. This dog is very much dedicated to its owner and at any cost tries to protect its home and family, which makes him a good guard dog. Rittie has a strong eager to work and always wants something to do. It has proved itself as a general purpose dog, it can be used as Guard Dog, Police Dog, and Guide Dog for disabled.

Rottweiler is an average shedder. Its straight and thick coat is easy to groom. Occasional brushing with a firm bristle brush is required to keep its coat healthy and it should be bathed only when necessary. The ears and eyes of the dog should be cleaned regularly and the claws should be trimmed properly.

This is a working breed, needs lots of daily exercises like long walk, jog, swimming, jumping etc. to keep it healthy both physically and mentally. Lack of exercise may develop behavioral problem in the dog and can also make the dog overweight. This dog tends to gain weight so should not be overfed. Instead of one heavy meal, numbers of small meals should be given to this dog. Rottweiler requires extensive socialization from an early age. This breed may not be good choice for the first time dog owners or people do not have much time to go out for exercise.
