Irish Red And White Setter Information

Irish Red And White Setter Description:

The origin of the Irish Red and White Setter lies in Ireland. This breed dates back to the 17th century when it was used primarily as a working breed. Back then, the breed was available as partly colored red and white breed as well as solid colored red breed. However, by the end of the 19th century, people started preferring the solid red variety which led to the decline of the partly colored red and white breed. Due to the concerted breeding efforts, the partly colored breed was revived. The breed was first recognized by the AKC in 2009.

The Irish Red and White Setter is a medium to large sized dog with an athletic frame. It has a large head in proportion to the body; prominent round eyes which are hazel or dark brown in color; low-set ears which lie close to the head; a long muzzle which is square in shape; black nose and taut lips with teeth which meet in scissors bite. This breed has a strong tail which is broad at the base and tapers towards the end. The tail is carried at level with the back or slightly below it. The coat of this breed is long, straight, smooth and silky. The color of its coat is white with solid red patches.

The Irish Red and White Setter is an intelligent and an independent breed. It is excellent with kids as well as other pets, including dogs. However, it lacks guarding skills and hence, it does not make a very good guard dog or watch dog. This breed is basically a working breed and does well in field work. It is a jovial breed which is friendly with strangers. It can be difficult to train. This breed is sensitive and may not take very well to strict discipline. Careful handling of the dog is required when training it. Hence, this breed is not recommended for beginners. Since it a field dog, it is not well suited to an apartment life.

Irish Red And White Setter Care & Grooming:

The Irish Red and White Setter is an average shedder. Its smooth and silky coat needs regular grooming to avoid tangles and matting. Almost daily brushing with a firm bristle brush is required to keep to its coat healthy. It should be bathed only when necessary and must be dried properly after each bath. Its ears and eyes should be cleaned properly to avoid any infection. Its nail and the hair around eyes, ears and paws should be trimmed regularly.

It is an active breed which needs a lot of daily exercise. Daily walks are essential for emotional and developmental needs of the dog. These should be supplemented with jogging or running in a secured fenced area. It tends to gain weight easily so should not be overfed. This dog is sensitive to very high temperature so should be adequately protected.
