Lakeland Terrier Information

Lakeland Terrier Description:

The Lakeland Terrier is one of the oldest breed of terriers existing today. This breed dates back to the 19th century. The origin of this breed lies in the Lakeland district of England. This breed is a result of crossbreeding between the Bedlington Terrier and the Old English Wirehaired Terrier. It was primarily used for hunting vermin, badgers and foxes, and also guarding the farms. The breed was first recognized by the AKC in 1934.

The Lakeland Terrier is a small sized dog with a well balanced body and a sturdy built. It has a slightly elongated head; medium sized eyes which are slightly oval in shape and hazel or brown in color; V shaped ears which are small in size and lie close to the head; black nose; a slightly elongated but strong muzzle which gives its face a goat like appearance; dark lips with teeth which meet in scissors bite, level bite or edge to edge bite. This breed has a high set tail which is slightly curved towards the end. The tail is carried in the upright position and is usually docked in most cases. Like other terriers, this breed has short, strong legs which are square in shape and large, well padded feet. It has a double coat with a hard and wiry outer coat and, a soft and dense undercoat. The color of its coat can be blue, black, liver, red, or wheaten.

The Lakeland Terrier is an alert and cheerful breed. With proper training it can goes well with kids as well as other dogs. However, caution is advised around smaller pets such as birds, rats, rabbits, cats etc. as it has a natural tendency to chase small animals. Socializing at an early age is required to bring out the best behavior. This breed is slightly reserved with strangers and has a tendency to bark, which makes it a good watchdog. Although it is an obedient breed, it can be a slow learner at times. A consistent approach is needed to train this breed. The training methods should incorporate a lot of variety as it can get bored easily. This breed adapts well to an indoor environment so is well suited to an apartment life.

Lakeland Terrier Care & Grooming:

The Lakeland Terrier sheds very little hair. The hard and wiry coat of the dog needs regular grooming. The coat needs to be brushed once or twice in a week and also a professional grooming 2-3 times a year to maintain a healthy looking coat. It should be bathed only when necessary. The eyes and ears of the dog should be cleaned properly. The hair around its ears, eyes and paws should be trimmed regularly. Its beard should be cleaned daily to remove any food remains.

This breed requires moderate exercise. Daily long walks are recommended for physical as well as metal well being of the breed. The walks should be supplemented with jogging or running in a fenced area. When out in the open, this dog should not be let off the leash as it has a tendency to chase smaller animals.

Lakeland Terrier Health Problems:

The Lakeland Terrier is generally a hardy breed. It is prone to some health issues like Renal atrophy, Ear and skin infections etc.
