American Foxhound Information

American Foxhound Description:

The origin of the American Foxhound dates back to the 18th century. The breed is a result of cross breeding between English Foxhound and French Foxhound. English Foxhounds were prevalent in the US in the 17th century. Some years later, the breed was crossbred with the French Foxhound which was gifted to George Washington and hence, the American Foxhound was born. According to written records, the breed was primarily used for hunting red fox along with Irish Foxhounds. The breed was first recognized by the AKC in 1886.

The American Foxhound is a medium to large sized hunting dog with a long head. It has low set, broad ears which lie close to the face; large but gentle eyes which are hazel or brown in color; a square muzzle moderate in length; an upturned nose black in color; short, high set ears; thin lips with teeth that meet in scissors bite. The tail of this breed is set high with a slight curve towards the end but is not carried over its back. The legs are straight and strong bones which give it an ability to run at great speed. It has a short and thick coat which is harsh to touch. Its coat can be of any color.

The American Foxhound, though a hunting breed, is a warm and affectionate breed. With proper training it mingles well with kids as well as other dogs. Caution is advised with small, non canine pets such as rabbits, rats, guinea pigs etc. because of the breed’s strong hunting instincts. This breed has a strong sense of smell due to which it can constantly get distracted. Thus, it becomes difficult to train them. However, it is an obedient and a loyal breed and a fighter to the core. Hence, it makes for a good watchdog. It is not well suited to city life because of its sonorous barking which can be heard for a few miles. It is largely an outdoor breed which likes hunting. It may not suit to an apartment life.

American Foxhound Care & Grooming:

The American Foxhound is an average shedder. Its short and hard coat is easy to maintain. Brushing its coat once or twice in a week with a firm bristle brush and almost daily brushing during shedding season, and also rubbing its body with a damp towel once in a week are sufficient to maintain a healthy looking coat. It should be bathed only when necessary. Its eyes and ears should be cleaned properly to avoid any infection.

This active dog requires lots of daily exercise. Daily long walks are essential to keep the dog healthy both physically and mentally. Walks should be supplemented with jogging or running every now and then in an open but secured area. However, it should not be let off the leash in an open area as it has a tendency to chase small animals. It tends to gain weight quickly so should not be overfed. This dog is prone to bloat, so small frequent meals are recommended instead of a large meal.

American Foxhound Health Problems:

The American Foxhound is prone to some health issues like Bloat, Bone problem etc.
